What's great about our PDF whiteout tool

    • Your PDFs never leave your device. Every box is added right in your browser.
    • Drag a solid box over anything on a page, in white, black or any colour.
    • Move, resize, Undo and delete any box before you save.
    • Cover areas on many PDFs at once, with a ZIP download.
    • Honest about what it does: the text under a box stays in the file.
    • Free, no limits, no watermark, and it works offline after your first visit.

    Add your PDFs

Choose PDFs or drag them into the preview. The first PDF opens as a vertical list of large pages, which is the easiest place to cover areas. Use Add More to add others later.

    Cover areas

    • Pick a colour, then drag over the area you want covered.
    • Click a box to select it. Drag it to move it, drag a square to resize it, or press Delete. Undo steps back.
    • Press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) to select every box in your PDFs, then change the options to change them all.
    • Press Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V (Cmd+C then Cmd+V on a Mac) to copy the selected box and paste it where your pointer is on the page.
    • Remember that the text under a box stays in the file. To remove it for good, use Redact PDF.

    Cover Areas and download

Click Cover Areas, then Download. Change anything and the button goes back to Cover Areas, ready for another run. Several PDFs download together as a ZIP.

How it works

A box is a solid rectangle drawn over the page. It hides what is under it from view, but the page itself is never redrawn, so the text and pictures under it are still in the file. The safety check confirms this: the text of every page must still be there.

After the file is made, it is opened again and compared with your original: the page count, page sizes, rotation, text and links must all match what they should. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • Does whiteout remove the text under it? No. It covers what you see, but the text is still in the PDF and can still be selected and copied. To remove text or pictures for good, use Redact PDF.
  • How do I cover something? Press on the page, drag over the area and let go. A box appears. To change it, click it: it gets a dashed blue outline, and you can move it, drag the small squares to resize it, or press Delete.
  • Can I match the paper colour? Yes. Choose White, or use the colour picker for another colour, then draw.
  • Will the page underneath change? No. The box is added over the page, and the page itself is never redrawn, so its text stays in the file.
  • Can the boxes be removed later? They become part of the page, so they cannot be removed once the PDF is saved. Keep your original file if you might want the page without them.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock. Digitally signed PDFs can be processed, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your PDFs stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The boxes become part of each page, so they cannot be removed afterwards.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use Whiteout to tidy a page for viewing or printing, and Redact PDF to remove sensitive text for good.
  • Match the paper colour with the colour picker if the page is not pure white.
  • To write new words over a covered area, use Add Text to PDF.
  • Keep your original file. Marks cannot be edited once the PDF is saved.
