What's great about our PDF checkmark tool

    • Your PDFs never leave your device. Every mark is added right in your browser.
    • Ticks, crosses, dots and rings, placed with one click.
    • Works on scanned forms and forms with no fillable fields.
    • Move, Undo and delete any mark before you save.
    • Mark many PDFs at once, with a ZIP download.
    • Free, no limits, no watermark, and it works offline after your first visit.
  2. 01

    Add your PDFs

Choose PDFs or drag them into the preview. The first PDF opens as a vertical list of large pages, which is the easiest place to place marks. Use Add More to add others later.

  3. 02

    Place marks

    • Pick a symbol, a colour, a strength, a size, One Page or Every Page and a Position, then click on the page where the middle of the mark should go.
    • Click a mark to select it. Drag it to move it, change its options, or press Delete. Undo steps back.
    • Press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) to select every mark in your PDFs, then change the options to change them all.
    • Press Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V (Cmd+C then Cmd+V on a Mac) to copy the selected mark and paste it where your pointer is on the page.
  4. 03

    Add Checkmarks and download

Click Add Checkmarks, then Download. Change anything and the button goes back to Add Checkmarks, ready for another run. Several PDFs download together as a ZIP.

How it works

Each mark is a few lines or a circle, drawn over the page, so it stays sharp at any zoom. The preview and the saved file are drawn from the same instructions, so they match. Because the page itself is never redrawn, its own text, images, links and forms stay exactly as they were.

After the file is made, it is opened again and compared with your original: the page count, page sizes, rotation, text and links must all match what they should. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • How do I tick a box? Pick a tick style, then click on the page where the middle of the tick should go. Zoom in with the + button to place it exactly.
  • Can I put the same mark on every page? Yes. Under Pages choose 'Every Page', then click once. A copy goes in the same place on every page of that PDF, and moving or changing one moves them all.
  • Can I put the mark in the same spot every time? Yes. Under Position pick one of the nine spots, such as top left, then click anywhere on a page and the mark goes to that spot, a little in from the edge. On Click puts it where you click. Picking a spot with a mark selected moves it there.
  • Can I make the mark paler? Yes. Lower Strength under Colour. At 100% the mark is solid, and lower values let the page show through.
  • Can I use this on a scanned form? Yes. The marks are added over the page, so it works on scans and on forms with no fillable fields.
  • How do I change a mark after placing it? Click a mark on the page to select it: it gets a dashed blue outline. Then you can drag it to move it, drag a small square to resize it, change its options, or press Delete.
  • Will the page underneath change? No. The marks are added over the page, and the page itself is never redrawn.
  • Can the marks be removed later? They become part of the page, so they cannot be removed once the PDF is saved. Keep your original file if you might want the page without them.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock. Digitally signed PDFs can be processed, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your PDFs stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The marks become part of each page, so they cannot be removed afterwards.

How to get the most out of it

  • Zoom in with the + button to land a tick exactly in a small box.
  • Use a dot to mark a list, and a ring to circle a choice.
  • Choose 'Every Page' to put a tick, say, in the same place on every page.
  • To type in a form field instead, use your PDF viewer. To write words anywhere, use Add Text to PDF.
  • Keep your original file. Marks cannot be edited once the PDF is saved.
