What's great about our PDF text tool

    • Your PDFs never leave your device. All text is added right in your browser.
    • Type, click and place, with the text added as real, selectable text.
    • Helvetica, Times or Courier, any size, bold and italic, in any colour.
    • One page or the same text on every page, such as a header or notice.
    • Move, resize, edit, Undo and delete any text before you save.
    • Free, no limits, no watermark, and it works offline after your first visit.
  2. 01

    Add your PDFs

Choose PDFs or drag them into the preview. The first PDF opens as a vertical list of large pages, which is the easiest place to place text. Use Add More to add others later.

    Add text

    • Type your text, choose a font, a size and a colour, then click on the page where it should start.
    • Click a text to select it. Drag it to move it, drag the square on its right edge to wrap it, drag the round handle above it to turn it, edit it in the box, or press Delete. Undo steps back.
    • Press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) to select every text in your PDFs, then change the options to change them all.
    • Press Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V (Cmd+C then Cmd+V on a Mac) to copy the selected text and paste it where your pointer is on the page.
    • To put the same text on every page, choose 'Every Page' before you click.
  4. 03

    Add Text and download

Click Add Text, then Download. Change anything and the button goes back to Add Text, ready for another run. Several PDFs download together as a ZIP.

How it works

The text is added over the page with one of the PDF standard fonts, so it stays sharp at any zoom and can be selected and searched. If your text has letters those fonts do not have, it is added as a sharp picture instead. Because the page itself is never redrawn, its own text, images, links and forms stay exactly as they were.

After the file is made, it is opened again and compared with your original: the page count, page sizes, rotation, text and links must all match what they should. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I put the text in the same spot every time? Yes. Under Position pick one of the nine spots, such as bottom right, then click anywhere on a page and the text goes to that spot, a little in from the edge. On Click puts it where you click. With a text selected, picking a spot moves it there.
  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • How do I add text? Type your text in the box, then click on the page where it should start. Click it afterwards to select it, and whatever you type in the box or change in the options changes it.
  • Is the new text real text? Yes. It is added with a standard PDF font, so it can be selected, searched and copied. Letters those fonts do not have, such as other alphabets or emoji, are added as a sharp picture instead.
  • Can I add the same text to every page? Yes. Under Pages choose 'Every Page', then click once. A copy goes in the same place on every page of that PDF, and moving or changing one moves them all. This suits headers, footers and notices.
  • Can I turn the text? Yes. Use the Rotate slider, or select the text and drag the round turn handle above it. It snaps to every 15 degrees when you get close. A turned text can still be moved, wrapped and edited.
  • How do I wrap a long text? Select it and drag the square on its right edge. The text wraps to that width. Without it, a line only breaks where you press Enter.
  • Will the original text stay? Yes. The new text is added over the page, and the page itself is never redrawn.
  • Can the text be edited later? It becomes part of the page, so it cannot be edited once the PDF is saved. Keep your original file if you might want to change it.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock. Digitally signed PDFs can be processed, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your PDFs stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The text becomes part of each page, so it cannot be edited afterwards.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use Every Page for a header, a footer or a notice such as Internal Use Only.
  • Give text a background colour so it stays readable on a busy page.
  • To add a date, use Add Date to PDF. To add page numbers, use Add Page Numbers to PDF.
  • Keep your original file. Marks cannot be edited once the PDF is saved.
