How it works

The text of every page is read and searched for your words. The pages that match decide where one part ends and the next begins. Each part is then copied out of the original page by page.

After the parts are made, each one is opened again to check that it has exactly the pages it should.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • When is this useful? When one PDF holds many documents that each begin with the same words: a batch of scanned invoices that each start with Invoice, a bundle of letters that each start with Dear, or chapters that each start with Chapter.
  • What does Split Before and Split After do? Split Before starts a new part on every page that has the text, which suits a heading at the top of a document. Split After ends a part on every page that has the text, which suits a closing line such as Sincerely or End of Report.
  • Can I split at one of several words? Yes. Type one word or phrase per line. A page that has any of them counts as a match.
  • Does it work on scanned PDFs? No. A scanned page is a picture and has no text to find. The tool needs real, selectable text.
  • How are the files named? The name of your PDF, a number, and for Split Before the line the text was found on, such as invoice-02 Invoice 20418.pdf.
  • What happens to pages before the first match? Keep makes them a part of their own, and Skip leaves them out. For Split After this setting is for the pages after the last match.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be read. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your files stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The parts are made on your device and put in a ZIP that you download.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use a phrase that appears only where you want a split, such as Invoice No rather than Invoice.
  • If a page that should match is missed, the text may be a picture, or spaced oddly: try a shorter word.
  • To split on blank separator sheets instead, use Split PDF at Blank Pages.
