How it works

Each part is built by copying pages out of the original, saving the part and checking its size, and adding or taking away pages until the part is as large as it can be without passing your limit. Pages are copied, never redrawn, so text, pictures and links stay as they were.

After the parts are made, each one is opened again to check that it has exactly the pages it should.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • How does it decide where to split? Pages are added to a part one after another, and the part is saved and measured. A part ends just before the page that would take it over your limit. The size is the real size of the saved PDF.
  • A part is bigger than my limit. Why? A single page can be bigger than the limit, for example a full-page photo. A page is never cut, so that page becomes a part of its own, and the list says so.
  • Why are the parts together bigger than the original? Every part carries its own copy of the fonts and other things its pages use, so the parts add up to a little more than the original.
  • What if my PDF is already small enough? You get a message and no file. Nothing needs splitting.
  • Can I make the PDF smaller instead? Yes. Try PDF Compressor, which shrinks the pictures, and split only if it is still too big.
  • What size should I choose for email? Most mailboxes accept 10 to 25 MB, but the limit applies to the whole message. Choose a little less than the limit, such as 8 MB for a 10 MB limit.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be read. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your files stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The parts are made on your device and put in a ZIP that you download.

How to get the most out of it

  • Leave some room under the real limit, because an email adds its own text.
  • Compress first with PDF Compressor: fewer parts may be needed.
  • A scanned PDF has large pages, so choose a bigger size to avoid parts of one page.
