How it works

The bookmarks are read from the PDF and followed to the pages they point at. Each part is copied out of the original page by page, so its text, pictures and links stay exactly as they were.

After the parts are made, each one is opened again to check that it has exactly the pages it should.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • What is a bookmark? A bookmark (also called an outline) is an entry in the side panel of a PDF viewer that jumps to a page, such as a chapter title. Only PDFs that have them can be split here.
  • What does Bookmark Level do? Level 1 splits at the main chapters only. Level 2 also splits at the sections inside each chapter, and so on. A part runs from one bookmark's page to the page before the next one.
  • What if two bookmarks point at the same page? Only one split can happen on a page, so they make a single part, named after the first of them.
  • What happens to pages before the first bookmark? Keep makes them a part of their own, named Start. Skip leaves them out of the results.
  • My PDF has no bookmarks. What now? You get a message and no file. Try Split PDF by Text, which splits where a word appears, or the PDF Splitter, which splits by page numbers.
  • How are the files named? The name of your PDF, a number, then the bookmark title, such as report-03 Results.pdf. Characters a file name cannot hold are dropped.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be read. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your files stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The parts are made on your device and put in a ZIP that you download.

How to get the most out of it

  • Open the PDF in a viewer first to see its bookmarks and pick the right level.
  • To split a PDF that has no bookmarks, see Create PDF Bookmarks, then come back.
  • Use File Name to change how the ZIP and its parts begin.
