How it works

The details stored with the file are deleted, including the language, the window bar choice and the embedded XMP record. Nothing on the pages is read or changed.

After the file is made, it is opened again and compared with your original: the page count, text, page sizes, rotation and links must all match what they should. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • What is removed? The title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and the creation and modification dates stored with the file, the language of the document, the choice to show the title in the window bar of a viewer, and the embedded XMP details that many programs add. Removing the language can make a screen reader pick the wrong voice.
  • What is not removed? Anything on the pages themselves, such as a name printed in the text, a signature image or comments written on a page. Marks left by the program that made the file inside page content are not details of the file.
  • Why remove metadata? It can show who wrote a document, when, and in which software. Removing it before sharing keeps those details private.
  • What if a PDF has no metadata? Nothing is changed, and no file is produced for that PDF. Its card says so.
  • Does this change the pages? No. The pages, text, links and pictures are exactly as they were.
  • Will a viewer add details again? Opening a file does not change it. Saving it again from some programs can add details back.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock. Digitally signed PDFs can be processed, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your PDFs stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The finished PDF is a new file. Your original is never changed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Remove metadata before sending a document to someone outside your organisation.
  • Check the page text too. A name typed on a page is not metadata.
  • To set your own title and author, use Edit PDF Metadata.
