How it works

The comments and marks added over each page are taken out of the page, together with their pop-ups. The page content itself is not read or changed.

After the file is made, it is opened again and compared with your original: the page count, text, page sizes and rotation must match, and exactly the comments counted must be gone. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • What counts as a comment? Anything added on top of a page as an annotation: sticky notes, highlights, underlines, strikethroughs, drawings, shapes, text boxes, stamps, carets, file attachments and their pop-ups.
  • What about marks made with other tools? Highlights, arrows and text added with tools such as Highlight PDF are drawn on the page itself, not stored as comments, so they are not removed here.
  • Are form fields removed? No. Form fields are left alone. To lock filled-in fields into the page, use Flatten PDF Forms.
  • What does the second choice do? Comments, Markup and Links also removes the clickable links on the pages. The words stay, but they no longer click.
  • What if a PDF has no comments? Nothing is changed, and no file is produced for that PDF. Its card says so.
  • Does this change the pages? No. The page content, text and pictures are exactly as they were.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock. Digitally signed PDFs can be processed, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your PDFs stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The finished PDF is a new file. Your original is never changed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Remove comments before sharing a reviewed document.
  • Keep your original file with the comments.
  • To remove text or pictures themselves, use Redact PDF.
