How it works

The pages of every PDF are copied into a new PDF, in the order of the cards. A contents page, or more than one for a long list, is made at the front, with each file’s name, its first page and a link to it.

The result is opened again and every page that came from your files is compared with its source: text, size, turn and links must match, and the page count must be the sum of the pages used plus the contents pages.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • What goes on the contents page? One line for every PDF you add, in the order of the cards: the file name without .pdf, dotted leaders, and the page number where that file starts. Page numbers count the contents page itself.
  • Are the lines clickable? Yes. Click a line in a PDF viewer and it jumps to the first page of that file.
  • How do I change the order? Drag a card, or use the arrows under it, before you click Merge PDFs. The contents page follows the order of the cards.
  • What are bookmarks? Bookmarks are the list of titles in the side panel of a PDF viewer. With Bookmarks on, there is one for the contents page and one for every file, each jumping to its first page.
  • Can I rename an entry? An entry takes its name from the file. Rename the file before adding it, and the line follows.
  • What happens to the bookmarks my files already have? The bookmarks of the original files are not carried over. The new bookmarks list the files.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be read. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your files stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The merged PDF is made on your device. The originals are not changed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Give your files clear names before adding them, because the names become the lines of the contents.
  • Check the order of the cards before you merge. The page numbers follow it.
  • Turn Bookmarks on for a long PDF, so readers can jump from the side panel.
