How it works

The form is asked to draw each field as it is shown, onto the page it sits on, and the field is then removed. The pages keep their size and turn, and the text of the page stays.

After the file is made, it is opened again and compared with your original: the page count, page sizes and rotation must match, no text may be lost, and no annotations may have been added. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • What does flattening do? It draws what is shown in each form field onto the page and then removes the field. The answers stay visible and print the same, but nobody can change them.
  • Why flatten a form? To send a filled-in form that must not be altered, to make it print the same everywhere, or because some viewers do not show form fields properly.
  • What if a PDF has no form fields? Nothing is changed, and no file is produced for that PDF. Its card says so.
  • Does the text stay selectable? Typed answers become page text where the viewer shows them as text. The page text that was there stays real text.
  • Can I undo it? No. The fields are removed. Keep your original file if you need to edit the form again.
  • What about digital signature fields? Signature fields are flattened like the others, which removes the signature. Flatten before signing, not after.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock. Digitally signed PDFs can be processed, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your PDFs stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The finished PDF is a new file. Your original is never changed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Fill in the form completely before you flatten it.
  • Flatten a copy, and keep the editable original.
  • To hide text for good, use Redact PDF.
