Each sheet holds 4 pages, so up to 3 blank pages go at the back of the booklet. The back pages print on the same sheet as the front pages, so 'Print Order' shows those blanks near the start. 'Reading Order' shows the booklet as you read it, with the blanks at the end. To put blanks elsewhere, type page number in Blank Pages.

How it works

The pages are put in the order a folded booklet needs, two to a side: the last page beside the first, then the second beside the second to last, and so on. Each page is placed on its half of a landscape sheet as a form made of its own text and graphics, so text stays real text. Each sheet holds 4 pages, so blank pages fill the last sheet. The back pages print on the same sheet as the front pages. Print Order shows the paper as it prints, and Reading Order shows the booklet as you read it.

After the file is made, it is opened again and compared with your original: the number of pages, the size and turn of every page and all the text must be what they should be. If anything differs, no file is produced for that PDF.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to a server.
  • How do I print the booklet? Print double-sided, flipping on the short edge, at Actual Size or 100%. Stack the sheets in the order they come out, fold the pile in half and staple along the fold.
  • Why are there blank pages? A booklet needs a number of pages that is a multiple of 4, because each sheet holds 4 pages. Blank pages are added at the end to fill the last sheet. They go at the back of the booklet. The back pages print on the same sheet as the front pages, so Print Order shows those blanks near the start, and Reading Order shows them at the end.
  • Can I choose where the blank pages go, or remove them? Yes. Type the pages in Blank Pages and choose Before or After. Blank pages you add replace the ones added at the end. The blanks needed to fill the last sheet cannot be removed, because a booklet needs a multiple of 4 pages, but you can move them, for example to sit before the back cover.
  • What is the difference between left and right binding? Left Edge is for languages read left to right. Right Edge swaps the pages in each pair, for languages read right to left.
  • Which sheet size should I choose? The sheet is landscape, and each half holds one page. A4 sheets make an A5 booklet, and Letter sheets make a half-letter one.
  • Does the text stay selectable and searchable? Yes. Pages are never turned into pictures, so text stays real text and vector graphics stay sharp.
  • Do links still work? No. Pages are placed on the sheet as pictures of the page made of its own text and graphics, and links are not carried across. The text and graphics are not changed.
  • Which PDFs are not supported? Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first with PDF Password Unlock. Digitally signed PDFs can be processed, but rewriting the file invalidates the signature.

What happens to your file

Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or tracked. Your PDFs stay in your browser's memory until you remove them or close the page. The finished PDF is a new file. Your original is never changed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Print a test of one sheet before printing the whole booklet.
  • Choose short-edge flipping when printing double-sided, or the back pages come out upside down.
  • For plain sheets with several pages on them, use Pages per Sheet PDF.
